Advantech, a leading provider of intelligent IoT systems and automation technology, is pleased to announce that its UNO-420 data gateway is certified on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and Ubuntu Core 20. UNO-420 is a PoE-powered data sensing gateway powered by an Intel® Atom™ E3815 processor, characterized by its high compatibility with diverse data acquisition devices and Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) permitting local data processing and cloud connectivity. By certifying Advantech’s UNO-420 for Ubuntu 20.04, Canonical, the publisher of Ubuntu, guarantees 5-years of maintenance updates and 5-years of extended security maintenance(ESM) software update support that give enterprises a stable and secure IoT platform for device management and service reliability.
Install everywhere with PoE-In design and Ubuntu Core
Designed to serve as a sensor data collector, UNO-420 is a compact data gateway that can be easily integrated with diverse equipment and machinery, even in awkward or remote locations that may be difficult to reach with a power cable. UNO-420 adopts a PoE-In design that allows the terminal to be powered via a LAN port, reducing wiring and overall maintenance costs. Ubuntu Core 20, a minimal, containerized version of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS for IoT devices and embedded systems, offers secure boot, full disk encryption, secure device recovery, and over-the-air (OTA) upgrades out of the box. Canonical ensures IoT data gateway operations remain safe and uninterrupted anywhere by providing OTA and transactional software updates.
Deployment-ready edge-to-cloud data sensing solution with high compatibility
With Ubuntu certification, Advantech and Canonical work together to provide deployment-ready IoT devices and ensure developers have the best out-of-the-box Ubuntu experiences. Canonical performs tests to confirm that the Ubuntu running on the system meets industrial grade standards and that each I/O on UNO-420 works properly. All I/O interfaces on UNO-420 are tested, including three configurable COM, two LAN (one PoE), eight programmable GPIO, one HDMI, and one USB 3. The gateway also comes equipped with Wi-Fi, 3G, and 4G/LTE wireless modules to facilitate long-distance data transmissions, over-the-air (OTA) updates, and real-time communication; allowing raw data to be transmitted to the cloud for subsequent visualization and analysis. To accelerate time-to-market, Canonical also provides Smart Start — a consultant service that condenses IoT decision-making into a 2-week, fixed-cost process.
Compact data gateway with ubuntu certification to enhance security and reliability
Reliability should be a top priority for IoT devices that require remote management. Aimed at harsh industrial environments as well as in-cabinet installations with limited space, the UNO-420 terminal features a compact form factor (125 x 125 x 50 mm/4.92 x 4.92 x 1.97 in) and supports a wide operating temperature range (-20 ~ 60 °C/-4 ~ 140 °F). Furthermore, UNO-420 benefits from Ubuntu 20.04 enhanced security and stability, including constant security patching process and features like kernel self protection, stack-clash protection, control flow integrity, and more. Canonical also provides continuous regression testing on the certified UNO-420 data gateway throughout the lifecycle of the Ubuntu release to guarantee support and security updates for up to ten years with 5-year ESM. Therefore, the certified UNO-420 will be kept up-to-date and will not suffer from backward compatibility issues caused by an update or security patch.
